The Syrian army is continuing to shell Homs as Bashar Al-Assad's is regime emboldened by the failure of the UN Security Council to push through a resolution.

The most serious violence Monday was reported in Homs, a city so battered that some opposition members have started calling it "the capital of the Syrian revolution." Several neighborhoods in the city, such as Baba Amr, are under the control of rebels.

Abu Hasian Al Homsey (name changed to protect identity) is one of those rebels, and spoke to Firstline this morning.

Abu Hussain claims he has photos proving the Syrian army is using tanks against those calling for change, and snipers are also being utilised.

“More than 2,000 soldiers came to us,” he says, “more than 50 people got killed, 20 of them were our children.”

He says pockets of Homs are without internet access and power, and had to use a satellite connection to speak to Firstline.

Syria is a highly unpredictable country, in part because of its web of allegiances to powerful forces including Lebanon's Hezbollah and close ally Iran.

“The Government cut off the internet, everything, the electricity, I’m charging my laptop in another neighbourhood and taking it back to my home,” he says.

“It’s a little better now, at least no-one’s dying right now,” he says.
