Dreamers achievement programme, 10 years on

When millionaire businessman Scott Gilmour returned to New Zealand after 12 years in the US, he wanted to do something to lift the achievement of children from poor homes.

He had seen an American initiative called the I Have a Dream programme, where wealthy sponsors "adopt" an entire class of children and offer them mentoring and extra tuition.

Not only were drop-out rates reduced, academic results also vastly improved.

Nearly 10 years ago, Scott Gilmour started the programme at Wesley Primary in Auckland.
