The Tourism Industry Association New Zealand (TIA) has a suggestion the majority of Kiwis would approve of – more long weekends.

As part of a strategy to boost domestic tourism, the TIA is asking the incoming Government to “Mondayise” Waitangi Day and Anzac Day when they fall on a weekend.

TIA Chief Executive Tim Cossar says while New Zealanders appreciate their country and enjoy holidays at home, “challenging economic times” mean many don’t get the opportunity.

“We all need a break but it’s getting harder to take time off work,” he says.

“More long weekends that give Kiwis the opportunity for short breaks is the perfect solution.”

Domestic tourism currently brings $36 million a day into New Zealand’s economy, and Mr Cossar says the tourism industry “is keen to work with the incoming Government to find more ways to help Kiwis enjoy fabulous holidays in their own backyard.”

Recent announcements – including new routes from Air New Zealand to tourism destinations, and the construction of a temporary stadium in Christchurch – are a positive sign for the industry, he says.

Stimulating domestic tourism is one of five actions promoted to the incoming government in the Tourism Future Statement.

The other four are delivering value, improving infrastructure, making travel easier and providing relevant information.
