Television networks are being accused of ignoring New Zealand's Paralympians.

Medals are being won in London but viewers are missing out on the action, says Labour's broadcasting spokeswoman Clare Curran.

"Coverage of the London 2012 Olympics and the corresponding Paralympics couldn't be more dissimilar," she said today.

"Sky TV pay wall subscribers are only being provided with the highlights of Paralympic events, while coverage for analogue or digital freeview audiences is limited to items on the six o'clock news."

Ms Curran says the failure to showcase the "enormous talent" is a lost opportunity to provide positive role models for the almost one in five New Zealanders with a disability.

I know lots of people who are saying they feel so inspired by these people but cannot see a thing because they only have free to air. It is such a shame. For anyone who thinks it is not seeing you have obviously never seen a good game of Wheel chair rugby

Unfortunately this is what happens under a National Government... National have a real problem with the disabled. Their preference would be to shoot these people rather than support them... this can be quite clearly seen in the amount of cutbacks National have made in disability support services since they have been in power. John Key is a bit of a darwinist... only the strongest should survive... the rest should be taken out into the back paddock and shot so that they arent a burden. Has been National Party policy for decades.

Thats what happens when you cease to have a quality and well funded public service broadcaster. Sucked in New Zealand. Thats privatisation for you. Since the public service broadcasting charter was scrapped by the current Govt ther is no obiligation for any of the main broadcasters in NZ to show the Paralympics. Appalling yes. But this is the nasty side of a soley commercial broadcasting market.

In the UK (where the Olympics are held) there is excellent coverage of the Paralympics and each Team GB paralympic athlete gets just as much ovation as those competing in the main Olympics.

Maybe Clare should read something meaningful on the subject by someone who understands TV. Something like this:

It very sad, and I'm sure that the Special Olympics in Korea in January 2013 will get even less coverage. We are very lucky to get good stories from Attitude TV though.
