TV3 leaders debate - the review

John Campbell did bugger all - and was spot on John Campbell did bugger all - and was spot on

Opinion by Jeremy Elwood

TVNZ have had their go, so now it’s TV3’s turn to host a leader’s debate before the election. This may seem disingenuous because of the site I’m writing for, but all bias aside, I think TVNZ just got schooled.

First up, the studio and style difference was evident from the start – no “viewer’s questions” making it all into an extended episode of “NZ’s Next Top Politician”, and no audience bathed in what can only be described as cop lights.

Secondly, the leaders were allowed to actually debate, not just read prepared statements. John Campbell did a great job of doing what a debate moderator is supposed to do – bugger all. Just keep things on track, allow people to reply (mainly Key, to be fair) and otherwise let them go for it.

And go for it they did. Goff, quite frankly, had the best of this one. Key looked tired and annoyed a lot of the time, despite keeping his head better than he did in any previous debate – no Jerry McGuire quotes for a change.

The “worm”, unscientific as it is, also favoured Goff, except when he talked about the possibility of going into coalition with Winston Peters, where he took a big dive. It appears NZ First scare more than just the Prime Minister. Having said that, Key was more convincing on asset sales than he has been in the past, and won points in the latter stages simply by sticking to point.

The commentary was thankfully kept to the end, and although it seems a bit odd to have Paul Henry, a former National candidate, invited as an impartial witness, you have to get your money back somewhere, right? So, in conclusion, a good night for Phil Goff, and refreshingly the teapot tapes hardly featured at all.

please for the sake of intelligent people don't have paul henry on the panel election night. Bad enough to my surprise and horror he was in the panel on monday. I'll end up switching everytime he talks or just get me stressed and hurl abuse at the telly!!!

Goff did well,face it everyone.
There is a bigger than ben hur problem looming for nz,that is firstly the asset sales and now nz knows that we have been lied to,hoodwinked by the PM,English,Ryall, people of nz should be made aware of key's past, while people see him as a great bloke there is a side to him that is dark and manipulating especially when money and assets are involved, involment with failed
banking entities does not make a wise money man and not a wise pm.

On tonight's news Duncan Garner said that Goff SHINED last night. Whatever happened to the more gramatically correct SHONE?

I have to add my comment to others. Good mediation and questions from John Campbell. But then Paul Henry! A National party hack and bigot. Duncan Garner - an erstwhile drinking buddy of John Key. Terese Arseneau: A fluffy girly voice that waffled and finally agreed with the boys. Goff was the winner. No ifs or buts. (PS I'm not a Labour Pty member)

Please, please - no Paul Henry on Saturday. Just as Key has been accused of breathing life into a dead party (ACT) why does TV3 feel the need to do the same with Henry? He is not a serious political commentator.

Great debate, ably moderated by John. The panel was a waste of time. If Paul Henry is to be on TV3 as part of the post-election panel on Saturday night, I will not be watching, as I would otherwise have done. There's only so much of him I'm prepared to tolerate on TV, and I've reached my limit.

Good debate, nice work John Campbell. TV3: I'm trying to decide which election night coverage to watch. If you put Paul Henry up, it's hello TVNZ. Giggling git. If you want an intelligent rightie get someone like Stephen Franks.

I think key complaining about winston bringing unstable govt is a laugh. Tell me John..what would you do if 1 or more of your MP's vote/abstain against asset sales? Your whole house of cards will come crumbling down. Media have said that some Nat members are unhappy with asset sales not to mention the desenting MP's would become instant heros for millions of NZDers so its not as unlikely as you might think.

john campbell was great, it was the first time both leaders had a fair go.
other reporters like espinar argue with goff and smile at key and garner just hates goff ,full stop. john campbell as always was excellent and that's what nz wants, fairness. I think how key is corrupting the election by telling voters to vote act and dunne ahead of his own candidates is actually illegal. could tv 3 look into this.
