The new service will combine free and pay channels

Television New Zealand and Sky are joining forces to launch a new pay TV service.

The new service will provide paid-for and free content, including free-to-air channels, and will be delivered to a digital decoder, which will be readied to use Ultra-Fast-Broadband in the future.

SKY has a 51 percent share in the joint venture, and TVNZ holds 49 percent.

SKY’s Chief Executive Officer John Fellet says the “exciting” venture will provide New Zealanders with more viewing options.

He says SKY believe the new service “will appeal to a large number of households”.

TVNZ's Chief Executive Officer Rick Ellis says the new service will allow the companies “to reach more New Zealanders in more ways”.

Content and pricing details will be announced “in the near future,” the companies said. The service will launch in the first half of 2012.

Charging for s service always creates a barrier for some, so I fail to see how it will reach more people.

How is it any different to what I have now, Sky Digital. It already has free and pay channels.
