TVNZ's charter to be scrapped

MPs voted last night to end Television New Zealand's controversial charter.

The charter encouraged the broadcaster to screen programmes that reflected New Zealand's culture and way of life.

But Broadcasting Minister Jonathan Coleman said the charter had never worked because TVNZ could not function with the dual mandate of meeting the requirements of the charter as well as existing as a commercial broadcaster.
