Artist Melinda Butt has just opened her exhibition about the joys of New Zealand in the 1960s.

It has not all been recreation for Melinda Butt though. Last December she was getting ready to exhibit in New York, and all of her artwork was stolen on the day before the exhibition.

"When it was confirmed that they were gone, I just didn't care about the surroundings and I just sat down and balled my eyes out and really went to town," Melinda Butt says.

The art was never recovered, and all she has to show for it are some digital photographs.

Ms Butt returned to New Zealand where she started again, from scratch.

Now she is proudly showing off her work in a gallery in New Zealand.

"I've had nothing but good feelings about this," Ms Butt says. "I have to admit for New York, I had deep-down bad feelings from get-go. This one I feel good about. I feel like a hippy."

Melinda Butt's art is on display at Auckland's Satellite Gallery.
