The impoverished former Soviet republic of Tajikistan is making a bid to enter the Guinness Books of World Records with what it says is the world's longest flag.

Created to mark the country's National Flag Day, the 1,500m long standard was unfurled during festivities in the Tajik capital, Dushanbe.

Dushanbe town hall spokesman Shavkat Saidov said Wednesday that Tajikistan has submitted its application to the Guinness committee in the hope of knocking Russia off the top spot.

A Russian flag about 1,260m long was presented in St Petersburg in August to mark the country's own national flag day.

Another ex-Soviet Central Asian nation, Turkmenistan, holds the Guinness record for the world's tallest flagpole, which measures 133m tall.
