Im for Clout. The police were a disgrace! But its all very well telling Mr Clout what to do now - he is just one man. What can all those who have written comments do to affect a change or a responce from the Police? Who or what recourse do we have other than this forum. I would like to see change - if they do these things to Clout, they will surely do them to other people in different ways - could be us then. The police need to know normal NZers wont stand for this sort of behaviour - but how do we do this with any affect?

Clampers sure have their work cut out. I contracted a clamper to keep our car parks clear of ignorant people who think they can park at my shop and then go elsewhere leaving no where for my customers to park. After many confrontations and dramas outside my store with the clamper I had enough so upgraded to a towing firm. Now those that park there are towed and charged 4 times more than what the clamp cost to remove.

Um... did I hear Tony Blair (Policeman) just THREATEN Mr Clout? I'd love to watch it again and pick out all the comments the Police made. It's sickening that the Police think they are above the law. Poor guy... he should file a court order for harrassment, especially now he has walked away from his 'living'. I hope more comes out of this for Mr Clout (and family).

I realise there will be faults on both sides here...but I feel to many small towns bully sole individuals. I know, I have seen it all.

Saw 3rd Deg last night and found it disapointing and infuriating.
The NZ police showed signes of how the police act in South Africa.
Where was the centre managements support. After all, this was their private parking lot. Not a public parking lot.
I hope TV3 and other authorities take this further. I look forward to seing a public apology from the police to Mr Clout. He should also have his criminal record removed. Good luck Daniel.

A car is a car no matter who is driving it and if it is using a park that is someone elses then of course it is clamp/clout fodder. Clout pays taxes like the rest of us he deserves protection from the police not threats from them. I hope the police heirachy are being as proactive about this abuse of power.

One of the most important facts overlooked and not reported was the leeway allowed for errant parkers. Imagine a young mum in the mall with her kids, there is a queue at the Chemist; she is ten minutes late getting back to her car. When she gets there a grinning Mr Clout has clamped her car. She broke the rules you say, imagine your wife is having a baby in the front seat. You speed to get her to the hospital, a Mr Clout lookalike pulls you over for speeding, and wife and baby haemorrhage and die due to complications. Rules and regulations are artificial and static they do not take into account the dynamics of actual life. Like all bullying there is an element of truth to what the bully says “I’m only doing my job” but it’s about the bullying and not the transgressions of those being bullied. Clamping people’s cars for parking just a few minutes overtime is bullying. The police were not sure what to do about it, they recognised it was wrong/illegal and did their best to dissuade Mr Clout. Lucky for him I am not a policeman in New Plymouth he would have arrested for obstruction when he clamped the police car and I would have made sure he spent the weekend in the cells.

What is it with all the nutters in New Plymouth - Its quite simple, don't park where you shouldn't. The poor guy is just doing his job. My guess is the mayor, the police, pompous citizens and are few old spitting ladies are now in hiding. Serves them right. They should all be forced to resign and or apologize to Mr Clout. He should sue.Start with the top cop who is a disgrace to the Police force.

Daniel Clout is a menace to society, shame on the landowners who employee him to stalk there carparks and especially shame on the Richmond Centre which I now refuse to go to on principle. If parking time has expired when on the street a council fine is (or was) $17. It costs $120 to be unclamped. This is New Plymouth, not downtown Auckland. It is an evil and unjust way to make a living. No-one intends to go over the parking limit but I am sure it has happened to almost everyone and those of you who have made comments supporting Clout would be equally as furious to have to pay $120 to be unclamped. Also be aware there is a Doctors in the Richmond Centre where I myself have had a 3 hour wait. We do not know the situation of the those caught on camera so do not judge their anger, and believe me there are MANY angry parkers in New Plymouth. Veto Daniel Clout.
