Quentin Tarantino is lining up Will Smith to play a slave in his upcoming spaghetti western movie Django Unchained.

The filmmaker has hand-picked the Men in Black star to portray the title character, a freed slave looking for his wife, in the follow-up to his 2009 war movie Inglourious Basterds.

The project will reteam Tarantino with Christoph Waltz, who won an Oscar in 2009 for playing a Nazi officer in Inglourious Basterds.

The Austrian actor is slated to play a German bounty hunter who wants to take down an evil plantation owner, while Pulp Fiction star Samuel L Jackson is also rumoured to be joining the cast.

Filming is due to begin later this year, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
