As the right to same sex marriage is being fought here, Australia is having the controversial debate as well.
The Tasmanian Labour Party has agreed to go ahead and introduce legislation allowing same-sex marriage if federal legislation fails.
The Tasmanian Gay and Marriage Rights Group’s Rodney Croome says it is a smart move.
“We know from the experience overseas that when one state in a particular country moves first on this issue then many same-sex couples go to that state to marry,” says Mr Croome.
“It provides that state with a huge economic bonus.”
Mr Croome hopes the legislation can be introduced by the end of the year.
