A missing man's submerged boat has been found but the 52-year-old is still missing, one day after the boat capsized and threw five people into Tauranga Harbour.
A rogue wave flipped the 4.3-metre aluminium boat between Bowentown and Matakana Island late yesterday afternoon, throwing the man, his seven-year-old grandson, his 23-year-old daughter, his 15-year-old son and his 14-year-old friend into the water.
All apart from the man made it to Matakana Island and a passing boat found them more than two hours later.
An extensive search of the inner harbour, involving a helicopter and boats yesterday evening and today, failed to find the missing Katikati man.
However, another boatie found his submerged boat this morning.
"Our plan is to continue the search through to this evening and then reassess our activities for tomorrow," said Constable Dave Pitchford.
