An elderly man bashed and left for dead at a Tauranga property on the weekend was discovered by his neighbour after he'd been lying there most of the night.

The 86-year-old is currently recovering at Tauranga Hospital, with injuries "consistent with an assault", according to police.

He was found on 1st Avenue at 6am on Saturday.

It's believed he drove to the property the previous night at around 10:30pm, after being called there by one of the occupants, reports the New Zealand Herald.

The attack occurred soon after. Police are unsure if a weapon was used, but believe the assailant was known to the victim.

"He's now in a stable condition but due to his injuries unable to be spoken to by police," says Insp Karl Wright-St Clair.

"Police are waiting for him to be in a condition so we can interview him and establish what happened."

No arrests have yet been made.
