There's anger that some taxi drivers have been trying to cash in by charging passengers excessive fares.

Rugby fan John MacEwan had to pay $95 upfront to get from Newmarket to Eden Park for Friday's opener.

Taxi Federation Executive Director Tim Reddish says that's outrageous.

"It's unlawful for a start," says Mr Reddish. "I just hope that the public are aware that taxi drivers are not entitled to do that."

Mr Reddish is urging people to report drivers who demand excessive fares during the Rugby World Cup.

but it is expected right? The taxi meter continues to run..taxi fares are based on how long the meter runs and if it was jam packed on Friday then what did you expect? It cant be helped...just get over it if you got to the event on time why complain? Some people who caught the train didnt get there at all!
