Security will be stepped up in taxis today, with all cabs in New Zealand now required to have cameras.

The law change follows a spate of attacks on taxi drivers last year, including the killing of Hiren Mohini, who was stabbed to death by a passenger in the Auckland suburb of Mt Eden.

Will cameras help stop violence toward taxi drivers?

The cameras cost about $1000 each and are paid for by drivers or their employers.

Images taken from the cameras are to be stored securely and protected from unauthorised access. However, the new legislation makes no mention of audio.

Footage must be kept for 168 hours.

Anyone caught misusing the recordings faces penalties of up to $10,000.

This is blatant "new world order" in progress. A ridiculous breach of our privacy with some half-hearted excuse claiming it will save millions of lives. No wait - it will save maybe 1 or 2 lives... Oh well, thats enough to warrant taking away your privacy altogether. Add to this the fact that TAXI DRIVERS are going to be responsible for ensuring this video remains secure (would you trust a supermarket trolley boy with nuclear missile codes? That'd be no different), AND the fact that there is no need to secure the audio AT ALL, and you've got yourself a blatant breach of human rights being PUSHED upon us by the government. When are we going to decide NO we won't accept this? Cameras in town centres? Cameras in taxi cabs? At what point will you open your eyes and tell the government NO? What about when they start putting cameras in your HOUSE? Nah, that'll never happen aye. Either do something about it with me TODAY, or enjoy living in your police state with big brother knowing every single move you make.
