Teachers are making another attempt to stop the Government’s National Standards scheme from going ahead.

Their union will hand over a 38,000 signature petition at Parliament today opposing the standards.

“The lack of understanding and confidence in [the standards] is now particularly stark. That has indicated that, in fact, they should have been trialled,” says Education Institute President Frances Nelson.

“What people are feeling now is that the whole system is part of a trial.”

Ms Nelson says the Government declined an offer to accept the petition, so Green and Labour MPs will take it.

Ms Nelson says the volume of signatures shows there is huge opposition to National Standards.

She says it is not too late for Education Minister Anne Tolley to step in.

Ms Tolley is currently in China.

How can they follow through with this, when enough time hasn't been spent on perfecting it. What a rushed decision - It's my children's education your stuffing with National. Not happy. Wasn't NZ up at the top of the board with school education? Have they slumped that much and why do we need this?

Allthe teachers ever wanted was a trial of the new system so that problems could be ironed out before it was implemented nationwide. Was that too much to ask?
