Linux Conference 2010 Wellington

Wed, 22 Jul 2009 12:00a.m.

Linuxconf among some circles is a well known, established norm, but to others who are new to Linux it’s a very exciting time.

It’s about free and open source software, and of course Linux. The upcoming Linuxconfs being held in Wellington on Monday January 18 to Saturday January 23.

It’s a great opportunity to learn more about things you didn’t know, have a gasbag with fellow Linux enthusiasts, catch up with people you've talked to on mailing lists or Twitter, or even (if you're geeky enough) to present your own talk.

Talks are on a wide range on subjects that are Linux related, and vary from basics, to fairly in depth. You can have a look at what went on in previous years Here.

The amount of people who travel to these meets is amazing (well into the hundreds), and there is often an appearance by Linus himself or similar Geek celebrities!

Not only are there lectures and interesting tutorials going on, they have also put together a great Partners program for your non-geek spouse to explore the city, and some great socialising time and meals.

So what I'm saying is, if you are interested in Linux in any way, chances are you want to be here.

If you are employed in the IT sector, you may even be able to convince your employer to pay for your entry and give you the time off work, don’t forget however to sort out accommodation.

Accommodation is easily and cheaply arranged, however when you book your tickets they often have student accommodation for fairly decent prices which are not only cheap and handy, but onsite also.

This year I am hoping to put my own presentation together. I have until Friday to submit it, and only a 25 percent chance of acceptance, scary stuff!

This will be my first Linuxconf, even though I've been using Linux for years. One of my highlights will most definitely be the Linuxchix talks. As a female in the IT sector there are very few of us about, so seeing a great turn out from the female sector. If you are female and keen on joining in on the fun then check out.
