Hackers shut down several Australian government websites Wednesday in a coordinated attack against a proposed internet filter that targets pornography and criminal sites.

The Australian Parliament House website was down for almost an hour and the Department of Communications site also experienced difficulties, the Attorney-General's Department said in a statement.

It said the distributed denial-of-service attack, which blocked access to the sites, was launched by a group calling itself only "Anonymous".

The attack mirrored a similar one last November, also attributed to Anonymous.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp reported that a statement from Anonymous said the attack was intended to protest the government's mandatory filter, particularly its blocking of certain pornography sites.

"More importantly, Anonymous does not approve of the steps already undertaken by the Australian Government to control what their populous sees," said the statement quoted by ABC.

The federal government - which is up for re-election this year - plans to introduce a mandatory internet filtering system by early 2011 that will block obscene and crime-linked web sites. The system would make Australia one of the strictest internet regulators among the world's democracies.

Critics say the filter will not prevent determined users from sharing such content, and it could lead to unwarranted censorship by overzealous officials.

I hope the governments dont make too many laws concerning the internet but leave it to the technicians to run because it would be another form of divide and rule limited freedom of expression and communication taken away from the people whom pay for that digital privilege. "The world has gone mad" in the words of Liza Minnelli- Youre so right!

Read some information on it. The sources that posted it said themselves that some of the information may be fudged, which in truth means, it is a slanderous lie. This is not for porn, it is for freedom on the Internet. Websites on the blacklist include depictions of small-breasted women (no matter the age), female ejaculation, and fetishes ranging from nylon stockings to bestiality. First of all, how would you like it if your own government was discriminating you because you have "A Cup" breasts? Feminists should raise their voices to these obscene suggestions by their government. Also included on the blacklist are sites regarding abortion. This information is not coming out of the ass of the many-headed Anonymous. This is all fact. You may find leaked versions of the blacklist online. (Google for those that have half of a brain) Regarding the term "Hackers." We are not "hackers." This is merely a form of Internet picketing. We are activists, because we are 'active' while others sit and do nothing. It may not be the best thing to do, but we have your attention. -Anonymous
