A 17-year-old boy has died while scuba diving near Gisborne.

The teenager was diving with a family member at Tatapouri Beach, 14km east of Gisborne, when he drowned about 6pm yesterday, Inspector Paul Jermy of central police communications said.

He was brought ashore by boat and was attended to by ambulance staff, but had already died.

Mr Jermy said it was unclear what had caused the drowning.
