A teenage boy is in a critical condition after the car he was in smashed into a tree just after a police chase was aborted in Auckland early this morning.

Another boy injured in the crash is in a serious but stable condition. Both are in Auckland Hospital.

The car, believed to have been stolen, was being pursued by police but the chase was called off when it ran two red lights and officers considered it too dangerous to continue, Senior Sergeant Lance Gardiner said.

It crashed into a tree on Parnell Rise, opposite York St, moments later at about 2:30am.

A third teenager in the car was uninjured.

The two in hospital are aged 14 and 15.

Police said investigations were continuing.
