A teenage girl has been found dead in an irrigation ditch, or water race, in Canterbury.

The 18-year-old woman was found at Intake Road, on the southern bank of the Waimakariri River, inland from Christchurch on this afternoon.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter and an ambulance were sent to the scene but the girl was already dead when they arrived, St John spokesman Ian Henderson says.

The girl had fallen into the ditch.

Police say a member of the public notified them about the find, but no further details were available.

Your story is so far from the truth it is mind boggling how you can report on a story that is so sad, what makes it more disturbing is you are not the only media to get this story wrong, our own local Press accepted the authorities story instead doing what a reporter is paid to do INVESTIGATE then report,If TV3 investigated they would of found local authorities lied about signs posted saying keep out, lied about knowing it was a local swimming hole,It is pretty ironic that if a stop sign is vandalised or knocked down it is replaced immediately, yet a well known swimming hole which according to local authorities was off limits, has NO signage pointing out the dangers, only today the 21/01/2012 more families were using this popular swimming spot, and still no signage warning of the dangers, shame, shame, shame
