Two teenagers have been charged after an armed robbery at a Gisborne dairy on Monday afternoon.

The owner of the Elgin Dairy on Childers Road was threatened with a weapon - believed to be a claw hammer or tomahawk - by two males in disguise about 2.45pm.

The pair then ran off with the shop's till.

A 14-year-old and a 19-year-old were arrested a short distance away, and appeared in Gisborne District Court on Monday charged with aggravated robbery.

The till and its contents were recovered by police, who are still searching for the weapon used in the robbery.

Police are asking residents in the area to check their properties to help find it.

Another remarkably well thought out and executed crime. Well done.
