After more than three years exclusivity to Vodafone, Telecom has announced it will sell Apple's iPhone lineup from Friday.

Previously, users who purchased the smartphone unlocked could connect to Telecom’s XT service. But - as there was no contract or phone subsidy - it could cost more than $1000.

The introduction of the iPhone to multiple cellphone carriers in a single market hasn't typically been Apple's preferred option. Until recently the company negotiated unconventional exclusivity contracts with networks who wished to carry the phone.

But, following the release of the iPhone 4S last month, Apple announced the phone would be coming to three of the four largest cellphone networks in the United States, with similar moves in international markets.

Apple's says the iPhone 4S is its most popular yet, selling 4 million units in its first three days of release.

Telecom's iPhone plans start at $80 for 200 minutes, 300 texts and 1 Gigabyte of data. The cost for the 16 and 32 GB iPhone 4S will start at $149, or $299, on a 24 month contract.

@Trademe my service provider just gave me an iphone 4 for free, I live in the UK. Telecom has had NZ over a barrel for years, over priced, data caps, dodgy deals, ineffective metering etc...
