State housing tenants are still protesting over eviction from their Glen Innes homes

Housing New Zealand tenants in the Auckland suburb of Glen Innes continued their protest over eviction tonight.

The Government's re-development of the area will create new state homes, with some land being sold off to private property developers.

To make room for the new development, 156 households will have to be relocated.

The protest began on Saturday with protestors occupying an empty Housing New Zealand property.

Mana party candidate John Minto is unhappy about people being evicted.

“Why is it that if you're on a low income, you're not allowed to live in a house with a view? Where did that rule from? That's disgusting. They want to take this land because it's valuable land and they want to give it to wealthy people. That's a disgrace.”

Housing New Zealand says 32 families have already moved out, with 24 of them still living in Glen Innes.
