The Amazing Spider-Man review

By Kate Rodger

We last saw the Spidey spandex five years ago when Tobey Maguire was still in the suit.

Spider-Man deserved better then, and I'd argue he gets the treatment he really deserves now.

Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) becomes the latest Brit to take on a comic-book hero, his casting just one of the many great decisions the filmmakers made here.

500 Days of Summer director, and the rather appropriately named Marc Webb steps up to blockbuster territory, and his attention to the relationships which fill the beating heart of this story is obvious.

The much-loved character Gwen Stacy takes centre stage opposite Peter Parker, bringing the romance; Martin Sheen and Sally Field bring the class; and Rhys Ifans does mad scientist very well.

I know there's a tonne of you out there going ‘Ooooh no another spider-man already?!’

I felt the same, but I'm gonna bet you won't regret forking out your hard-earned moolah for this one.

3-D was just made for spidey-cam, and along with the character-driven story bound together with pitch-perfect casting, chemistry and performances, The Amazing Spider-Man comes pretty close to being exactly that.

Four and a half stars.
