The American is based on a novel by British author Martin Booth called A Very Private Gentleman, and what a perfect description that is of this story.

Oscar-winner George Clooney (Syriana/Good Night and Good Luck ) is The American, Jack, a man full of secrets and darkness, as one might expect from a man whose trade is a trained assassin for hire. He's grown weary, now ready to hang up his weapon for good. But extracting himself from his life of violence is no easy task, and he agrees to one last job.

He holes up in a hilltop Italian town, quietly assimilating himself into the local community. He allows himself to form a wary friendship with the local priest, who can see through into the darkness within. He also forms somewhat more of a friendship with the local hooker Clara (Violante Placido).

But his past chases him, and he knows there will be no peace if he runs from it, instead turning to face it.

Dutch director Anton Corbijn brought us Ian Curtis biopic Control, showing his gift of cinematic restraint in his filmmaking. This gift he also brings to The American. We are introduced to Jack’s life of violence suddenly and shockingly, but we get to know him from there slowly and gently. The conflict of the life he now wants, and the one he’s trying to escape is a constant, and as an audience we want that for him almost more than he does.

It’s important to be prepared for the pace and tone of this film. This isn’t an action-packed James Bond/Jason Bourne thriller. It’s a more cerebral character study, and moves very slowly. This will mean boredom for shorter concentration spans, but will mean nourishment for those who prefer their stories told patiently.

Clooney one again shows his incredible class, allowing his character’s almost callous professionalism to give way to moments of joy and hope. He fits into the gorgeous Italian setting like a natural, and drives this movie home.

Settle back and let The American in, he’s worth it.

Four stars.
