The canine star of The Artist has seen off competition from Martin Scorsese's Hugo dog to win the top prize at the Golden Collar Awards.

The Goodfellas director campaigned to have Blackie the Doberman included in the nominations for Best Dog In A Theatrical Film at the annual prizegiving, which recognises the most talented animals in Hollywood.

However, even Scorsese couldn't secure his dog the top prize at the ceremony on Monday night as The Artist star Uggie took the coveted honour.

Other winners included Koko, the star of Australian movie Red Dog, who scooped the Best Dog in a Foreign Film prize, and Brigitte from Modern Family, who won the trophy for Best Dog in a Television Series.
