So there’s this guy who ‘collects people’. He captures somebody, tortures them then puts them in this weird box thing, which is then used as ‘bait’ for other people, who he then kills. Wait, wasn’t he ‘collecting’ them?
How does he break into someone’s house and within a few hours set up a huge range of extremely complicated traps that look like they would take weeks to construct?
These are but some of the questions one could ask while watching The Collector. Basically, it makes next to no sense and if you’re wanting a storyline that isn’t abysmal, this film isn’t for you.
If you can handle a rubbish plot, insane leaps of logic and are a fan of the Saw movies, you will probably enjoy The Collector.
The best piece of gore involves a bunch of bear traps and it is fairly brutal, although like a lot of the violence, it is edited in a way that you can’t clearly see what is going on. Still, there’s enough blood and cruelty to please horror fans who like their movies sadistic.
The sound design is generally very good, with Nine Inch Nails style industrial music driving the intensity up.
I enjoyed the seriously grim tone of the film and some of the effects were carried out well, but the complete incoherence and silliness of the whole thing left me unsatisfied.
Two stars.
