Two Oscar-nominated performances from two masters of their craft in a film so desperately romantic that it melted the frozen heart of this world-weary reviewer.

Based on the tempestuous marriage late in the lives of famous Russian writer Leo Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer) and Countess Sofya (Helen Mirren), offset by a far younger romance courtesy of James McAvoy’s character Valentin, this is a gorgeous, surprising and nourishing film.

I wouldn’t’ be missing it if I were you.

Four and a half stars.
