The Orator is New Zealand's first ever submission for Oscar's consideration in the best foreign language category and a first time feature outing for its Samoan-born Kiwi director Tusi Tamasese.
At the centre of his story is Saili. Small in height, he leads a simple village life with his wife and her daughter. Events then unfold which force him to find his inner hero, as he searches for the strength to protest the ones he loves.
While this story doesn’t have enough explosions and car chases for the multiplex audiences, it pays to remember that often its the quiet and the gentle which can pack the most powerful emotional punch.
The Orator is an excellent example of that.
Prepare for the pace of this film and allow all your senses to embrace it.
Four stars.
