The Secret in Their Eyes came from nowhere to take Best Foreign Language Film at this year’s Oscars, impressing the Academy more than The Prophet and The White Ribbon.

My expectations were high, and they were met.

A retired state prosecutor decides to write a novel based on a brutal unsolved crime, a crime which changed his own life irrevocably.

This gently and compellingly woven tale slowly peels back its layers, to reveal a near-perfect melding of a whodunnit with a gorgeous love story, a film which still haunts my senses weeks later, and in a very good way.

Five stars.
