The Veils
By Tova O'Brien
Their line up has changed a bit, and so has their sound, but for indie rock band The Veils, the touring has been constant.
They've been on the road, on stages and constantly on tour for the last eight years – but now finally The Veils are home - the Kiwi half that is, and it may just be for the summer, but at least one thing's certain.
"If we're anything we're a New Zealand band - we're certainly not an English band," says bassist Sophia Burn.
And for a country keen on claiming all its local talent, especially the exported ones, New Zealand - you might have to try a bit harder for this lot.
"I'd love to be claimed, I don't feel sufficiently claimed actually," says Finn Andrews, lead singer. "I think 'cause I've got this kind of car crash accent 'cause I was born in England and have been back and forth my whole life you know. I've always kind of been a foreigner here and a foreigner in England."
But along the way the band has been forming and cementing relationships with other bands, and Burn says New Zealand musicians reap the rewards that come with a smaller community.
"It probably benefits from the fact that everyone knows each other," she says. "You can't piss people off because everyone's connected, whereas in London you can afford to be a lot more of a wanker to people."
Frontman Andrews pricked up the ears of London record execs when he was just 17, and he's been travelling with his music ever since, building a reputation for a must-see live show.
It was Queenstown last night, Christchurch tonight and The Veils will continue making their way up the country that some of them, some of the time, call home.
