On arrival at the holy grail of child's play Rhys Mathewson appears more interested in the playground than an interview with 3 News.

After alarming regulars, he pulls himself together just long enough to explain a few things.

“I always wanted to be an actor, but that's because I didn't know being a comedian was a viable career choice, which is lucky that I found that because I can't really act,” he says.

Rhys' stand up has won him awards and respect, but in the playground he's in unfamiliar territory.

“I don't really have any limitations or like things I specifically go I'm going to talk about this because it's funny, whatever I think of that makes me giggle I'll give it a crack,

“It was my fourth form school disco and I was over one side with my friends, breaking out the old school moves, a little bit of the shopping trolley, little bit of the sprinkler,” he says.

But he was unable to get him to bust those moves in the playground. We did however find out his secret to success.

“Gigging as much as I possibly could, that sort of thing, that's the only way you can get better as a comedian. Just keep doing it and doing it and doing it until you want to bash your head against the wall because you're sick of your own jokes,” he says.

He says he isn't sick of his new jokes just yet. But with 10 shows in two weeks he reckons that point isn't far off.
