Services are being held throughout the country and around the world today to mark the 92nd Armistice Day.

November 11 marks the official ending of WWI in 1918.

Armistice Day commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany, which took effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Since this day services have been held around the world to remember the fallen and to gather together to celebrate the transition from war to peace.

In contrast to the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, the New Zealand RSA does not hold its inaugural Poppy Appeal in association with Armistice, instead it is held the day prior to Anzac Day.

This happened in 1922 when the ship carrying the poppies from France arrived in New Zealand too late for the scheme to be properly publicised prior to Armistice Day, thereby forcing the Association to postpone its Poppy campaign until the day prior to Anzac Day 1922.

After this historic day Poppy Day became forever associated with Anzac Day in New Zealand, setting it apart from the rest of the world where it is largely associated with Armistice Day.

In Auckland the War Memorial Museum is holding a service to commemorate Armistice Day in the WWI Sanctuary at 11.00am.

And in Wellington, New Zealand Defence Force personnel will join the Governor General of New Zealand, the Honorable Sir Anand Satyanand, and Lady Susan Satyanand at a commemorative service at the National War Memorial at 11.00am.

As part of the service a dawn to dusk Vigil will be placed over the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior.
