Three people have been hospitalised after a serious crash involving two cars and a truck and trailer unit on State Highway 5 between Tirau and Rotorua.

A black Holden Captiva heading towards Rotorua collided with a truck and trailer unit and a ute at around 8:30am, Fairfax reports.

Three people were transferred to hospital with moderate injuries. Two other people had to be cut out of the wreckage of the vehicles and their condition is unknown.

Traffic delays are expected as a section of the road was closed to allow for a scene investigation before being reopened to one lane.
