Three mothers have been caught breastfeeding while driving on Auckland's motorways by police.

The women were stopped during a recent 10-day police operation focusing on child safety in vehicles.

Auckland Motorways manager Inspector Shanan Gray said police officers were shocked to come across the infants being breastfed while their mothers were at the wheel.

Insp Gray said it puts everyone in an "extremely dangerous situation".

"If they had to stop their vehicle suddenly, or they were involved in a serious crash, the infant would surely be ejected from the vehicle," he said.

Police were also stunned by the number of children found in foot wells or the boots of vehicles.

Insp Gray said because the main focus of the operation was to educate drivers about how to safely restrain children, it's difficult to pinpoint how many children were found in foot wells or boots.
