Three teenagers have been arrested over the murder of 74-year-old Donald Alfred Stewart in Hamilton last month.

The male youths aged 14, 15 and 17 will appear in the Youth Court in Hamilton today.

Mr Stewart, of Wellington, was found dead with head injuries near a public toilet on London St in the central city on June 27.

His Peugeot car was later found at an Auckland wrecker's yard and a forensic examination was carried out.

Mr Stewart was captured on security footage filling his car with petrol in Hamilton the night before he was found dead, and the car was seen early the next day in a ditch in the city.

But when police went to recover the vehicle the following day, it had been removed.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Greene said today that sightings of the car provided significant information.

He said while police were pleased with the arrests, the investigation was ongoing and they were still following a number of lines of Inquiry.

Police would still like to hear from a good samaritan who gave a group of people a ride into town from Collins Rd, on the outskirts of Hamilton, shortly before 7am on June 27.

Mr Stewart died from a blow to the head but no weapon has been found. He had an injury over one eye.

My deepest and sincerist apologies are extended to Donalds family unfortunately and without our knowledge of occurence the alcohol fuelled teens visited our home after the incident. Although barely known to our resident teenager their actions have left me shocked and ashamed, reevaluating my previously flexible boundaries on aquaintances, teenage privacy and community awareness..

Thank God you all feel the same way! This was a family relative and I thought that was reason enough to think there needs to be a death penalty. Nothing else better to do on a Saturday night aye, what has happened to teenagers these days? I am so glad they have been caught, but now we will all pay taxes for them to be in jail, unless they get to walk. But seriously, they will just reoffend. They are teenagers who think they are invincible with no sense of consequence. That should be your 'chance' at making right choices in life no matter how old you are!!

The hell with keeping the identity of the youths private! They done a murder to a helpless 74 year old man. How dare they! I am so angry that they could do it. How would they like it if someone done it to their own dad or grandfather!Yes exactly! Thats my point. To the family of the 74 year old my deepest sympathy to you all I am feeling your hurt, your pain and the trauma of what you are all going through. To the families of these pathetic losers! No dont say where did we go wrong ! You didnt tell your son Oh by the way son while you out go and find someone to kill ! They all have the responsibility of themselves. They each knew the first blow they done was wrong but no they carried on. Dont go to the Court with them they dont deserve any sympathy from you. They want to do something like how they see fit then let them face the consequences.
I hope they get shown on tv. I also hope they all get whats coming to them. How I wish..... but alas I forgot life doesnt mean jack s(*& ! in New Zealand. The offenders get a better deal then the victims!
