Ticket scam targets Tonga travellers
Wed, 04 Jul 2012 12:58p.m.
Police are investigating an airline ticket scam involving false tickets that appear to offer heavily discounted flights to Tonga.
Fifteen people have contacted Waikato Police so far about the scam.
Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Andy Bu Bear says police are also investigating reported cases in Auckland, Wellington and the South Island.
He says people should be wary of cheap fares that appear too good to be true.
“All too often it is the people who are the most vulnerable and who can least afford it that are targeted,” he says. “If something doesn't appear right it probably isn't and in situations such as this we recommend people use the services of reputable travel agents, airlines or service providers.”
Anyone that may have information on the scam is asked to contact Hamilton Police on 07 858 6200.
