Just a fortnight out from the US open Tiger Woods is back in winning form.

A blistering final round has taken Woods to victory at the Jack Nicklaus hosted memorial tournament and tied him with Nicklaus for wins on the PGA tour.

It was victory number 73 for Wood and his fifth at the memorial, but this time there is only one shot being talked about: a spectacular chip that carried Woods to his second PGA victory of the year, and ties him with Jack Nicklaus in second for all time tour wins. Sam Sneed is top with 82.

And fittingly this win came at the tournament hosted by the Golden Bear and on a course he designed.

“He had to rub it in my face right here didn’t he?” says Nicholaus.

Woods started the day four back, but four birdies over the opening seven holes had him just one shot off the pace.

Bogeys at eight and 10 slowed his progress, only for some of the old Tiger magic to propel him to the top of the leader board.

His seventh birdie of the round sealing the memorable victory.

“To birdie three of the last four, that was a good finish – and the birdie at 16 that was pretty sweet too,” says Woods.

He now heads to next week’s US open hoping to close in on another Nicklaus record - 18 major victories.
