The Government is trying to gauge public opinion on the best way to protect the country's most vulnerable children.

A campervan is currently travelling the country hearing submissions on the Government's green paper.

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett is travelling with the caravan, and says a wide range of people are turning out to make their voices heard.

She says that tightening up child abuse laws will infringe on the public’s privacy,

“The reality is that to take the next step I think, in protecting these most vulnerable children, we’re going to have to do things that will affect everybody. So it’ll actually affect those children and those parents who are not abusing or neglecting their children, because it may mean a little bit of a lack of privacy, it might mean that we investigate a little bit further. If we had mandatory reporting, you might see a professional reporting something that really isn’t abuse and it being investigated more,” she told Firstline this morning.

Ms Bennett says she has found a lot of parents would rather sacrifice some privacy if it meant the Government erred on the side of caution a bit more.

I was raised in a fundamentalist christian church, on the main street of Hamilton. What I was subjected to as a child can only be rationally describe as child abuse. To rub the salt into the wounds we New Zealanders give tax refunds and tax breaks to institutions and individuals who commit this abuse. If we really cared about child abuse we would not reward it.

First, the basis of moral law is freedom of conscience to be responsible. When the government nullifies the merit of morality by legislation, the government has taken over but by shoving it down everyone's throat whether we like it or not. Second, it will be fuel to fire of vigilantes and innocent parents victimised. But it will create tension between status and cultural groups. Violation of privacy for both parents and children especially. There is a clear relationship between child abuse and the economy. Child Abuse always rises among social consequences when families struggle against the cost of living. This is synonymous with National's history.

response to ian its not a fact that most abuse is done by maori and pacific islanders there are just as many foreign and european cases these are just not as exposed or are really kept behind closed doors we as maori are not a violent people we are caring and nuturing. our people believe in taking care of our environment and our own, violence is a learned behaviour which we as a people need too address it is called colonisation we need to decolonise, who is the govt too say our way of life is not right, what evidence is there that we were violent, we believe in discipline as a need when learning and teaching , the abuse that has been reported is not done by the actuall parent in most cases it is done by the step parent, i believe in my religious beliefs sometimes discipline is needed not abuse, too raise a child, why are we following in other countries footsteps when these laws have not changed anything if anything it has created a monster you'll find more hidden behind closed doors cases which unfortunately wont be exposed until a child passes and the other end of the scale is we will have an undisciplined society which the govt will have to with there monster jails will be overloaded and more will be built just like america, paula bennett does not have any idea what she is doing she ripped the govt off for years when she was on dpb she collected a 1000 dollars a week had 1 child and also got them too pay for her too study she does not know at all how a solo parent with 4 children survives on 288 a week how could she when she was on a benefit when rent at most was 150 a week for a really nice home not 400 truth be known the majority of beneficiaries are foreigners not nz born, migrants and refugees, same as in hnz ironic when hnz was set up too house maori and help them too buy because land was stolen and at the end of the day beneficiaries pay tax on income too and pay gst on everything they buy and every bill they pay just like evryone else leave them alone

We don't need tighter child abuse laws mostly because cps don't follow the laws as it is the more power they have the more they'll force there way into home's of happy children an that isn't right.Mostly cause there infringing upon the constitutional amendment rights of privacy for the home an infrinding upon the warrant act as well.If the child neglect law needs to be tighten then ok but tighten the constitutional amendment rights of families make the cps employees respect the rights of the families then when there told there being refused entry doesn't necesarrly make the parent guilty it mostly means there protecting there rights of themselves an there children. An that if the cps worker has evidence then instead of threatening with police go an do it properly an get a warrant signed under oath & affirmation by a judge stop illegally using letter's as warrants/

wondering

I am wondering if Paula Bennett actually had much hands on care of her child. Or if family and others took on the greater role of raising her child. She appears to have little or no empathy , compassion for or knowledge of the needs of children. She has no concept of the requirements , concerns and tribulations of parenting. She also appears to have been a totally inadequate and heinous role model for her daughter and grandaughter who are caught up in a vicious downward spiral.

Privacy - rubbish!.The abusers of children, be who ever they are, should be hung out in full public view to shame them, for the crimes that they continue to commit. The truth of the matter is that most of the offenses are committed by Maori and Pacific Island peoples, but to state this truth is to be labeled a racist.

We should accept and listen to Christine Rankin who has commonsence answers and follow her idea that all NZers should read Ian Wisharts book Breaking the Silence. At the Maternity Hospital while a Mum is bonding with her newborn baby is exactly the right time for Paula Bennett's National Government to supply a good parenting book that gives practical tips that could prevent abuse once Mum’s back home in her own environment with her cute little bundle of joy because knowledge (plus phone numbers to ring for advice) gives confidence to a nervous new Mum.The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. Compulsory follow up Nurse Visits to the Mothers home during the first year of babies life allow a Nurse to identify the babies at risk so they can notify cyfs to provide help immediately where needed. Hospital staff know as soon as baby is born what little ones could be at risk and could quietly notify police to make it their business to keep in contact with hospital and cyfs, we can't keep having monsters kill our little babies. Good on Paula Bennett, finally we have a hands on minister prepared to do something positive and ask Kiwis for ideas, repealing the useless antismacking law would help prevent good parents being criminalised, police investigating a smack wastes time and money that could be spent on throwing child abusers into jail and saving lives of precious children.

This will be another step towards control by the government. Take a stand against this people, or we will have no freedom left. Choose to be one of the people not one of the sheeple.
