The Government is trying to gauge public opinion on the best way to protect the country's most vulnerable children.
A campervan is currently travelling the country hearing submissions on the Government's green paper.
Social Development Minister Paula Bennett is travelling with the caravan, and says a wide range of people are turning out to make their voices heard.
She says that tightening up child abuse laws will infringe on the public’s privacy,
“The reality is that to take the next step I think, in protecting these most vulnerable children, we’re going to have to do things that will affect everybody. So it’ll actually affect those children and those parents who are not abusing or neglecting their children, because it may mean a little bit of a lack of privacy, it might mean that we investigate a little bit further. If we had mandatory reporting, you might see a professional reporting something that really isn’t abuse and it being investigated more,” she told Firstline this morning.
Ms Bennett says she has found a lot of parents would rather sacrifice some privacy if it meant the Government erred on the side of caution a bit more.
