I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream - or scream at ice cream, as the case may be.

Tip Top has launched a new ice cream range of 13 new flavours.

But four of those flavours now come in a tub 20 percent smaller than what people are used to.

Tip Top says they've actually increased the value of the ice cream by shrinking the four flavours because they say there are more goodies in the mix.

Tip Top Managing Director Alastair de Raad explained how it works.

“9 of the 13 are still the same size, the same price. We haven't changed a thing and for the four that we have changed, they're smaller but we have actually added some more inclusions. We did some research last year and they said that they wanted more gum drops in the goodie goodie, more chocolate in the monkey business, so we've actually increased the inclusions by about 17%” he said.

But is this true? Campbell Live decided to put the theory to the test.

They took two tubs of goody goody gum drops ice cream. The first tub was an original two litre tub, the second was the new and, apparently improved, 1.6 litre tub.

The 1.6 litre tub did contain more goodies than the 2 litre tub but the difference was only 6 - 52 goodies in the two litre tub and 58 goodies in the smaller tub.

So is it worth losing 20 percent of the ice cream for 6 more gum drops?

Mr de Raad justified the results saying the only other option would be to put the price up.

“I think that people will appreciate that 9 of them are still the same price and still the same tub size and the four that have reduced in size, I think they'll understand it's either that or put the price up.”

The consumers institute isn't worried saying consumers should vote with their wallets.

And not all people think it's a bad thing, cameraman Simon says it's all about the goodies.

“I don't care about the ice cream, it’s all about the lollies for me.”

No more Tip Top for us. There are plenty of other brands. Lie to NZers at your peril. Dishonesty is bad business, just ask Cadbury.

No I am sorry but that is just not right, you can still put more gumdrops in to the 2lt, you are just playing games with us and what about the price of the tip top Ice cream cake that has gone up $3.00 in the pass six months tip top you are not playing a nice game but then who of you big companys is.

Your story failed to do an objective comparison of the gumdrop per litre ratio. 1.6l with 64 = 40 Gd/l 2.0l with 58 = 29 Gd/l a 40% increase in the gumdrop ratio.

Talk about stupid. This is classic School Certificate stuff: if the price has stayed the same but the content decreased to 4/5ths its original level, then effectively the new price is 5/4ths of the old, i.e. the price has "increased" by 25%.

Just more spin doctoring from TipTop. Why not just put the price up and be honest like others? People are used to everyday price increases. All this bollox about extra ingredients is meaningless to most of us. I buy ice cream for the ice cream, never the lollies or other crap. I'll be voting with my wallet at the supermarket. Goodbye, Rip Top.

How dumb is this cameraman? Are you buying icecream or lollies? If it is a combination of both then as the tests have proven they are short changing consumers by 9% approximately. Which means the intentions of this ice-cream icon are not honest to its consumers.
