An American food blogger is hoping to compile a recipe book inspired by meals eaten in the world of Tolkien, including 'Hobbit pork pies', 'Elvish lembas bread' and 'Balrog wings'.
Health Dill from Arlington, Massachusetts is aiming to write a book entitled Medium Rare and Back Again: A cookbook featuring food from the world of JRR Tolkien, a play on words from the full book title The Hobbit: There and Back Again.
He has teamed up with Tolkien expert and US English professor Corey Olsen to write a 30-recipe book “with recipes, pictures, cooking tips and tricks, and witty commentary”.
“These recipes will cover different parts of Tolkien's world - light and delicate Elvish recipes like lembas bread, stout roasted Dwarven fare, hearty Hobbit pies and stews, as well as a few oddball recipes like Balrog wings,” he says.
He wants the book to be available in both print and free online versions, but right now he doesn’t have the funding to do it, and has started a kickstarter.com page to raise $10,000 to pay for the research, cooking and photography.
Mr Dill has already begun experimenting with Tolkien-inspired recipes on his food blog Dillicious with hobbit pork pies and balrog wings.
He also plans to develop a recipe for the Elvish lembas bread, but is unsure if it will have the same properties as the fictional sort.
“I do not promise that a single bite of it will sustain you for days on end – I’m not an elf, I can only do so much.”
But this is not the first attempt to recreate meals from Tolkien books.
Recipewise.co.uk has a list of food and recipes from The Hobbit book including pork pies, seed cakes and buttered scones, and The Tolkien Society also has a recipe section.
The Middle-Earth Foodie blog has a range of authentic-sounding recipes inspired by the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit books.
Warner Brothers also launched a “Recipes from Middle-Earth” section of The Hobbit movie website, which allows fans to submit their own recipes for Tolkien-like meals.
