The Tongan government has launched an investigation into hundreds of thousands of dollars of New Zealand aid money which is believed missing.

A report into the aid money was given to New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) diplomatic staff on Monday, the Dominion Post reported.

MFAT was aware of an investigation by the Tongan auditor-general relating to a New Zealand aid program project in Tonga, a spokesman said.

"If there are monies that are not fully accounted for the ministry will take whatever appropriate steps are required."

New Zealand will continue to give aid money to Tonga during the investigation.

Still paying for aid while an investigation is underway for missing aid. Get a backbone government and suspend payments. Also there should be a plan to ensure funds are used to ensure our supported island neighbours utilise them appropiatetely to become self sufficient without further aid. Catch a fish and it will feed someone a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat all day drinking beer.
