Mt Tongariro erupts in 1897

It's been more than a century since there's been an eruption from Mt Tongariro - the big eruptions in the 1990s were from nearby Mt Ruapehu.

Eruptions in the 1920s and 1970s were from nearby Mt Ngaruahoe, which although considered a separate volcano by most, is connected to Mt Tongariro and geologically part of the same system.
