The most senior police officer in Britain has now joined the casualties of the phone hacking scandal.

Sir Paul Stephenson quit his job, despite saying he personally had done nothing wrong.

His decision threatened to eclipse another decision at the Yard - to arrest Rebekah Brooks, Rupert Murdoch's former chief executive.
