She's only 24 but already Kate Moross has made a huge impact on the design world.
The British designer has designed everything from billboards to music videos. She has even done a clothing line for Top Shop.
She's in New Zealand this week to speak at the annual Semi-Permanent09 conference in Auckland.
Aimed at designers, film makers, artists and agencies, the design event brings together some of the world’s most influential designers, photographers and illustrators, and has been going for six years.
Moross started small, designing gig flyers and t shirts, and moving on to murals for restaurants and shops. During that time, she built up a repertoire which features triangles and illegible lettering.
She says her success has ‘snowballed’ and her career has been accidental – not to say it hasn’t been hard work.
“I think the one thing I capitalized on was most people use university as a chance to not work, and I kind of did the opposite. I had a full-time job as a designer whilst I was at university,” she told Carly Flynn of TV3’s Sunrise.
“I like to do as many things as I can.”
When faced with the debate between artistic freedom and working for commercial brands, Moross is straightforward.
“You'd be surprised how soulful a lot of ad agencies are, especially in the UK. There's this real kind of progressive, creative motivation in a lot of the corporate branding,” she says. “Ultimately it shouldn’t be this soul-less, corporate monster.”
Semi-Permanent09 is running at the Aotea Centre in downtown Auckland on the 14th and 15th of August.
