Torrential rain has caused widespread flooding in the Australian state of Queensland.

Areas in the south east of the state recorded more than 400 millimetres of rain.

Authorities received 90 emergency callouts and 16 rescues were carried out in the fast flowing waters.

In the worst incident, a 14-year-old disabled boy was killed when the car he was in was washed away near Toowoomba.

On the Gold Coast, two young women were rescued after their car became stuck at a flooded river crossing.

A man convinced the women to leave the car before helping them out of the water to safety.

A mother and her four children were washed away by floodwaters while swimming under a waterfall near Rockhampton in central Queensland.

The children were rescued, but the mother remained missing.
