Drivers under the age of 20 could face tougher drink drive limits as part of the Government's review into youth drinking.

Justice Minister Mark Burton has released the review, which began almost 12 months ago, after a bill to raise the legal drinking age was defeated.

Key proposals from the review are to set the blood alcohol limit for drivers under 20, who do not hold a full licence, at zero.

Also proposed is cancelling licences for managers who are convicted three times for selling liquor to a minor within a two year period.

The review is now up for debate by interest parties with some of the proposals expected to be put forward to become law.

Stewart i am going to take a liberty here and answer for Sal . Hope you dont mind Sal feel free to tell me off ! Your praise followed by criticism of Sal for having one drink is about as patronising as it gets and is enormously irritating . Sal has his one drink because he is with his friends and he is joining in and thats perfectly reasonable however your condescension is not !

Sal l think what you do for you friends is admirable but tell me why if you are going to drive do you have any alcoholic drink at all..surely one drink isnt going to do anything for you so why bother with it...just drink the water.

I am 21 years old - I can go out to the pub with my friends been the sober driver and have one drink..i then will drink water the rest of the night - not all under 20's are irresponsible - i was under 20 not that long ago and i still use to have 1 drink and drive - i never crashed once. Its not just the young 20 year olds that are drink driving it is the older ones too - stop picking on us!!! We arent all the same!!! I am fed up with it all been about the young ones - well guess what New Zealand its the 30 -40 year olds that do the most drink driving and crashes - we never hear about that do we - NO!! Cause New Zealand only want to hear about the young drivers and boy racers!!! Wake up and smell the coffee and leave us young ones alone!!!

I don't see this as a solely teenage problem. Before I was 25,f 12 out of 30 of my class mates from primary school had died as a result of drunk driving accidents. Not all of the driving drunk. I believe there should be zero tolerance for drink and driving!!

the law does not mean jack #$#$ when nobody follows it. we need tougher penalties for failing to follow the already existing laws! *laughs at the people with 10+ DIC convictions*

Increasing legislation doesn't work! The government has already figured this out which is why the bill to raise the drinking age was overwhelmingly quashed. Actually enforcing the laws they make is the first thing that we must address, for a start look at the liquor stores who are selling to underage people without valid identification. As for drink driving, it is a problem over all age groups, not just under 20 year olds. Furthermore the law enforcers should keep the current age laws and deal with those who abuse alcohol on an individual basis.

Your all so eager to be politically correct it makes me sick . I enjoy having a glass of wine at a restauraunt and driving home ! I have never had an accident or even come close . Why dont you just round all the teenagers up and thrash them you all seem to hate them so much . As for futher drinking restrictions what a lot of nonsense . The bureaucratic bullshit surrounding the licensing process of young people is becoming more absurd by the day . Drivers that drink and have major accidents are invariably several times the limit . So changing the limit would only penalise those of us who behave responsibly . This applys to all ages ! The proposed law changes will not help anyone just take away more freedom and make peoples lives more difficult .

Zero tolerance and Catch,Confiscate and Crush any vehicle involved, would really get their attention. However the government is more concerned with Tax Revenue and the Lawyer funded gravy train (closely allied to their own)than the lives and safety of New Zealanders. Brainless? No they do it with malice and aforethought! Spineless, gutless, and no balls to do other than throw new POINTLESS initiatives which under the present shortage of POLICE ON THE STREETS, IMPOSSIBLE to enforceable, ABSOLUTELY!Were it a slur against Maori, for instance, there would be the armed offenders committed to it in the blink of an eye! But something which affects the safety of all New Zealanders? "Tough New Measures on the way" New Zealand has definitely LOST THE PLOT!
