Trademe has cancelled the membership of a user selling chemicals that could have been used to make a bomb - but not because they're concerned about the listing itself.

A user called "Counting Sheep One" was selling a range of chemicals, some used by farmers as fertiliser.

But there was concern the amounts and the combinations of chemicals being sold made it too easy for someone to make a bomb.

Trademe's Trust and Safety manager Chris Budge said he's tracked down the seller - who was not who he appeared to be.

“Yes he was a young guy, yes he is a student, but he said he has been laid up in bed in Napier for the last two days with a stomach bug and he didn’t know anything about the media inquiry,” he says.

Mr. Budge says reporting on the matter means many of the public will now be aware what chemicals are needed to make a bomb - and Trademe will now consider whether it has a moral obligation to remove similar listings.

he's a moron for doing his job of upholding the rules of the site, and the laws? I guess there is a moron somewhere, but it may be more the people who openly flaunt the rules of trademe and then post on news sites supporting the breaking of rules. I suggest Chris you learn about the Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Act 1997 (ACVM Act), then you wont look like a moron.

Mr Budge is a complete moron. Why doesn't he ban the sale of cars on trade me, they kill people everyday and its illegal to kill/harm someone with a car. A non illegal chemical is only illegal if its an explosive and/or used to kill/harm somebody. Removing the listings is one thing (which is ok), but canceling the account altogether? How come supermarkets are allowed to sell DHMO, Di Hydrogen Monoxide over the counter? It is responsible for killing more people than any other chemical substance.
